Fortune Mill Room 1: how to beat the Massive Rat

Quick Answer
Room 1 is a dartboard, and the Massive Rat won't let you leave until you've earned 1,000,000 gold. Throw darts for gold, pour every coin into gold-value multipliers first (like +750% gold value), then grab the Machine Gunner Mouse to auto-throw and the 2× dart throw upgrade. A throw that starts at 3 gold can climb past 97,000 — that's how the million arrives.
Room 1 overview
Room 1 is your tutorial economy and the first gate in Fortune Mill. A giant rat (the Massive Rat) blocks the exit and demands 1,000,000 gold. It looks impossible when your first dart pays 3 gold — but Room 1 is where you learn the compounding loop that carries the whole game. Master the upgrade pacing here and every later room feels familiar.
How darts work
Each dart you throw pays out gold. Two separate things scale your income, and the difference matters:
- Gold per throw (value). How much each dart is worth. Value multipliers compound, so this is your top priority early.
- Throws per second (speed). How fast darts fly — including the 2× dart throw upgrade and the auto-thrower. Strong, but buy it after value.
Income = value × speed, so eventually you want both. But coin-for-coin, a big value multiplier almost always out-earns a speed bump in the early game.
Upgrade order
- Buy the cheapest gold-value multiplier first — e.g. the +750% gold value upgrade.
- Keep stacking value upgrades while they stay affordable; do not hoard gold.
- Unlock the Machine Gunner Mouse as soon as you can — it starts auto-earning.
- Grab the 2× dart throw to roughly double output for one purchase.
- Once Room 1 ticks along on its own, open Room 2 and let synergy kick in.
A simple decision rule when two upgrades compete: divide each one's cost by the extra gold-per-second it gives, and buy whichever pays for itself soonest. See the full best upgrades guide for the cross-room picture.
The Machine Gunner Mouse
The Machine Gunner Mouse is a helper you befriend that throws darts for you — your first taste of real passive income. Once it's running, Room 1 keeps earning while you tend other rooms or step away. Prioritise unlocking it; it's the upgrade that turns Room 1 from an active clicker into an idle earner.
Later, a Room 2 jackpot can award the Gunner a golden dart-gun — a concrete example of how rooms boost each other, and a reason to keep scratch tickets running once you reach Room 2.
Reaching 1,000,000 gold
Don't try to grind to a million by hand. Raise your gold-per-second until the million arrives quickly: a fully-upgraded throw can pay 97,312 gold a hit, so the goalpost that felt absurd at 3 gold becomes a few throws away. Keep the Mouse auto-throwing, keep reinvesting, and let the compounding do the work. The moment you can, open Room 2 — a second room makes synergy upgrades worth buying and speeds Room 1 up too.
